Orthodontics - Teeth Straightening

NHS BracesWhat is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a technique used for straightening teeth using a brace to improve the appearance of crooked or crowded teeth. Straightening teeth using not only improves their appearance but can also improve their function and make then easier to clean, helping you keep them for longer.

What Is A Brace?
There are many kinds of orthodontic brace which are used to straighten teeth.  Some of these braces are removable, whilst some are fixed to your teeth and are sometimes known as ‘train tracks’. There are also cosmetic braces available as both fixed and removable ‘aligner’ and clear type braces.Adult & Childrens Orthodontics

Am I Suitable For Braces?
Traditionally braces and orthodontics were carried out on children and teenagers. Today braces are used in both adults and children to straighten crooked or crowded teeth. Without full clinical assessment it is very difficult to say if you would be suitable. You do however need a good standard of oral hygiene and gum health.

In order to fully assess your suitability and to give you the complete choice of orthodontic options we would always advise that you see a Specialist Orthodontist for assessment.

Can I Have Clear or Invisible Braces?
Traditionally fixed braces are made of stainless steel brackets with wires which move the teeth, although clear or tooth coloured brackets are also available.

There are also many types of removable clear braces or aligners. These aligners can be removed for eating, for photographs or important events etc... They work in a different way to fixed braces and only work when you have them in. To see if you would be suitable for clear braces we would advise a consultation with a specialist orthodontist to look at the different options and find out what would work best for you.
